Make plans for RadioActivity 2012
RadioActivity 2012 will be held at the Sheraton Washington North Hotel in Beltsville, Maryland.
We are running later in the month than prior years to get a break on hotel room prices!
This year will feature a Tube and Ephemera Auction Thursday evening. Details below.
Jack Thompson, former CEO of the National Radio Institute (NRI), the Washington, D.C. based radio servicing correspondence course school, will be speaking at the Friday night Banquet.
And look for theme catagories in the Old Equipment Contest.
The Flea Market is, for many, the highlight of an antique radio meet. The RadioActivity 2012 Flea Market will open at 6:00 am on Friday morning. MAARC requests that attendees refrain from buying or selling prior to that time. The Flea Market is open to the public, and all are welcome to come through and browse or shop. Friday morning is usually the best time to do so. People wishing to sell items are required to register for the meet and pay for space rental. Items for sale should pertain to vintage radio or television.
A special Tube and Ephemera Auction will be held Thursday evening with consignment starting at 6:00pm. This auction will be restricted to tubes, books, magazines, and ephemera (paper such as catalogs, ads, etc.). MAARC is downsizing its tube trailer and will put lots of tubes into the auction. (All tubes will be sold “as-is”—no guarantees. At this auction there will no minimum opening bid.)
The Main Auction will be starting at Noon on Saturday. Consignment time starts at 8:30 that morning and closes at 11:30. Reserves are allowed. There is a minimum opening bid of $15 per lot that will be strictly enforced. There is a charge ($1.50 for MAARC members, $2.25 for non-members) for no-sale items including those that do not receive the minimum bid. This is to discourage both junk lots and excessive reserves. MAARC members pay a 10% sellers' commission, non-members pay 15%. Click here to see MAARC's full Auction Policies (.pdf format).
Got "Junque"? There will be a no-commission, no-reserve, Walk-Around Auction in the Flea Market area at 8:30 Saturday Morning. This is a great way to dispose of lesser quality lots that would not make the minimum bid in the Main Auction.
The scheduled seminars include:
On Friday
"Granny Klink’s Half Century Plus in Radio and TV" by James O'Neal (Noon)
Ed Lyon's Radio Repair Clinic (1:30pm)
"History of FM Broadcasting" by Chris Sterling (3:30pm)
On Saturday
"Collecting Radios in a Series and Photographing Your Collection" with Domi Sanchez (10:00am)
The Friday Night Banquet Speakers:
At the RadioActivity 2012 banquet, Jack Thompson and Brian Belanger will team up to present a history of the famous Washington, D.C.-based National Radio Institute. During most of the 20th century NRI trained thousands of radio, and later TV, technicians. Brian will cover the early NRI history and Jack will cover NRI's later years.
Jack Thompson was hired by the National Radio Institute in June 1956. He rose quickly through NRI's management ranks and served as President and CEO for 12 years before retiring in 1987.
Registration Desk will be open on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 7:30pm.
